Do you believe dreams mean anything?
What do Dreams Mean?
Because dreams are something many people do every night, we want to know what
dreams mean. Dream interpretation is not an exact science, but is has come a long way to
explain what dreams mean and how they can help our waking lives.
A dream is influenced by an individuals waking life. Dreams are an accumulation of
experiences, memories as well as current and past feelings. Some individuals will dream
more vividly at different times in their lives such as when they are stressed or feeling
overwhelmed. There are also dreams which are considered common dream themes or
universal themes in dreams which occur in everyone’s dreams. The circumstances may be
unique, but the overall theme is the same for each person.
Common or Universal dream themes include:
Animals
Flying
Being naked in public
Falling
Being chased
Being lost
Death
Each theme can be interpreted a couple different ways; however, each theme is going to
be based on what is going on in an individual’s life and what their subconscious may be
trying to tell them.
Animals – the appearance of animals in dreams typically help us deal with emotions
from our waking lives. Emotions that affect us may include fear, pride, jealousy, anger or
hatred. The animals in our dreams could be a beloved family pet, either long since passed
or one still in our lives, or a representational archetype.
Flying – this is a rather common theme in many dreams and could have a few overall
meanings. First, if your dream of flying is fun and exciting, you are probably feeling
confident about achieving your dreams in life. If your dream of flying is a struggle, you
can’t get off the ground or you can’t maintain your flying, this could mean you are having
difficulty controlling something that is happening in your life.
Being naked in public – although no one would want this to happen, the mean could
be just as revealing. Dreaming of your nudity could mean you are fearful of being
discovered or exposed for something you are not proud of, something you feel is wrong.
You may feel as if you are being misjudged by others. If you are dreaming you suddenly
discover your nudity and are trying desperately, but unsuccessfully to cover up, this
could show you are vulnerable to a situation. And if you are dreaming of another person’s
nakedness, you are either wanting to discover the truth about them or accepting of them,
depending on how you react to their nudity in your dream.
Falling – this is one of the most common dreams of all time. It is also probably one of the
scariest. It signifies you are having feelings of anxiety and insecurity in your waking life
about something important. You could be feeling out of control about a situation in your
life or you could be indulging too much in a self-destructive behavior.
Being chased – being chased by an animal is common in dreams among young children.
People can dream about being chased by a person, an animal or even a giant toaster, it
doesn’t really matter what is chasing you in your dreams, but the threat feels all too real.
This is because the rational part of our brains is asleep during dreaming so it cannot stop
you and say – you know a giant toaster doesn’t exist in real life! What chase dreams could
mean is you are running away from a stressful situation in real life, either an event or
a person who could be a threat to you. If you find that you simply cannot run away in
your dream, feeling as if your legs won’t work, you may be feeling as if you are stuck or
cannot defend yourself in your waking life.
Being lost – if you are lost in a dream, this could signify being at a loss in your career or
in a relationship with your partner. When you are lost, you experience a sense of panic
and a feeling of urgency about your situation. You may not know how to help yourself
come away from the isolation and despair. If you have lost something in your dream and
cannot locate the item, ask yourself how the item may remind you of something in your
waking life, either a person or situation.
Death – dreaming of death can be a scary and unwanted thing. Dreaming of your own
death, you subconscious may be trying to tell you that something within you, perhaps a
destructive behavior has been outgrown and it is time to put it to rest and let go of it. This
could mean that some part of your coping skill set is no longer working and you will need
to replace it with something else. Dreaming of death can be a healthy thing.
Dreams can have many different meanings at different times in your life. You will have
to look closely at everything that is happening in your waking life to help you determine
what your subconscious may be trying to tell you while you slumber.
